2017 Year In Review
The annual Guam Hotel & Restaurant Association gala dinner brings industry members together at their best-dressed. It is an elegant black-tie evening of fine dining, accolades and spectacular entertainment. Each year, guests are given the mission of raising funds for GHRA scholarship programs and other industry programs.
Keep Guam Clean
In partnership with the Japan Guam Travel Association, GHRA organized a Keep Guam Clean trash pickup along the roadside and beaches of Tumon Bay in an effort to continue keeping the island beautiful and safe for all.
Softball, basketball, volleyball and bowling leagues bring GHRA members together in sportsmanship and camaraderie. A little competitive spirit may be involved too. GHRA leagues are coordinated and overseen with the help of the Sports Committee. Proceeds from the games allow the organization to give back to the island community through equipment and supplies donated to the Department of Parks & Recreation.
Annual PHARE Bartending Competition
Coordinated by GHRA’s Food & Beverage Committee and sponsored by ST Corp., the Annual PHARE Bartending Competition provides a forum for Guam’s professional and novice bartenders to take the stage and showcase their drink mixing skills. They create their own unique concoctions and perform acrobatic feats with the tools of their trade. Held on the final day of PHARE, this exciting competition is the signature event as it draws a large audience of supporters from the general public and is widely publicized.
International Housekeepers Week
Each year, GHRA honors the dedicated and hardworking housekeepers for their contributinos to the industry’s success. The week kicks off with legislative resolutions presented to the employees by the chairperson of the Committee on Tourism and culminates with a banquet at which 800 housekeepers and their guests enjoy an evening of accolades, light-hearted competitons, skits, dancing and dinner.
The Tourism Cup Championship Golf Tournament
This year’s Tourism Cup Championship Golf Tournament has been recognized by the Royal & Ancient Club as a World Amateur Ranking, which provides points based on the average performance of counting evens over a rolling cycle in the previous year. The success of the tournament has made it possible to raise funds for GHRA’s safety and security programs and training programs in the industry. Over the years, the GHRA tournament has raised funds to provide search and rescue equipment and supplies to the Guam Fire Department, beach patrol equipment and supplies to the Guam Police Department and lifeguard equipment to the Department of Parks & Recreation with the government of Guam.
GHRA partners with the Guam Visitors Bureau to host the HERO Awards which stands for Hospitality Employees Are Outstanding – on a quarterly basis. The awards recognize outstanding individuals in the hospitality industry in management, supevisory and non-supervisory roles.
The GHRA Social is an industry night for great networking and social gathering for GHRA members. Members have the option to purchase one of two sponsorship packages, which include complimentary tickets to the event, drink coupons and an area to promote your company and products at the venue. The donations help provide the necessary funding to continue to operate and provide the necessary programs and events that help shape and drive the tourism industry.
GHRA Social – 45th Anniversary
During a special GHRA Social in Fall 2017, GHRA membership celebrated 45 years of service. In that time, GHRA has given back more than $850,000 in donations through scholarship programs, education and training, safety and security equipment with the key government agencies and support for tourism related organizations.
